Barnstormers Awards Theater Scholarship

Rachel Kostrna
Barnstormers Theatre has awarded its 2012 Mildred Watt Performing Arts Scholarship to Rachel Kostrna, a graduating senior at New Hope Christian School. The scholarship, which is named for one of the theater's founders, is designed to honor local students who plan to study theater in college. Kostrna has been accepted into Southern Oregon University's theater program for the fall. She plans to pursue a major in theater and a minor in musical theater.

Kostrna played the role of Liesl in the Grants Pass High School production of the Sound of Music last November. She also has appeared in recent One Eleven Theater productions of Cinderella and Peter Pan and in Rogue Music Theater's 2010 production of The Wizard of Oz.

"I want my profession in life to be something that I totally love and enjoy doing, and I believe theater is just that in my life,' Kostrna wrote in her scholarship application. "I always get excited to work with a different director because then I can analyze and study how that different person interprets a character or how a scene should happen."

Barnstormers Theatre, Oregon's oldest continuous community theater, uses half of the proceeds from its Saturday matinee performances to fund the scholarship. The other half goes to a local charity that each production's director chooses.
